LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation
We read the text RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers and asked to create a DLO that explores and discusses both perspectives of this historical event in our groups.
Something I found interesting about this text was how the dawn raids started, and it teaches us a good moral: “treat others the way you want to be treated”.

We read the text ‘Shameful stain on NZ history’: Polynesian Panthers push for dawn raids apology and were given the provocation – Should the Government of today(2021) apologise for the dawn raids of yesterday (1970s)? to explore and discuss in our groups.
To show our thinking we created a DLO that reflected both sides of this provocation and your opinion. Something I found interesting about this text was how the polynesian panthers have grown in success.
This week Panmure Bridge School was took on a trip to the Aucklan War Memorial Museum, we took in a lot of knowledge for recent researches like visiting the WW1 section where we found out the equipment they used back in the day, the ball of memories which show the soldiers in commemoration of service to our country, we learnt about the different types of volcanoes and the rocks like pumice, obsidian, scoria, basalt etc.
LS2 was challenged, we had 30 seconds to decide what to pack if there was a volcanic eruption near us. Our group had to make wise choices: backpack, toys, can of food, hole punch, torch, can opener, pan, gloves, cat, muesli bar, cat food, goggles, bottle of water, tea towel, first aid kit, mask and a colouring book. My group had packed everything we didn’t really think it through but it was really fun to do.
I enjoyed our time at the museum, learning about new things I haven’t learnt already. My favourite activity was packing the bag because it challenged me to be fast enough to pack the important things I need in case of an emergency/volcano eruption.
LI: To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.
We read the text Once a Panther and tasked to create a comic strip that depicts a scene related to the ideas of prejudice, justice, or taking a stand in today’s world using thought bubbles or dialogue that explains the image.
Something I found interesting about this challenge was, something I found that was interesting was the it’s amazing history and how far it has come.
LI: To understand how scientists know so much about dinosaurs.
Our challenge was to create a Google Draw that shows clearly labelled examples of each fossil type, and tells us more about the body type fossils and the trace type fossils. Something I found interesting was that body fossils are very rare as the soft bones are really delicate and for trace fossils their are many different types of trace fossils such as footprints, burrows, trail and even fossilized feces (coprolites).
I enjoyed this task as we got to learn more about the other fossil types such as the two: body fossils and trace fossils.
LI: To create a DLO that tells Mary Annings story from her perspective story.
Before we take part in our own dinosaur dig LS2 were challenged to capture the story behind Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter and paleontologist during the early 19th century.
Something I learnt was that she was famous for finding the complete body fossil of the Icthyosaurus. I found this activity fun as we can learn more about dinosaurs and the findings of Mary Anning.
LI: Learning of what a paleontologist is and what they do.
For this task we were challenged to write a 50 word summary that tells us what a paleontologist is and what they do. We also included a statement that tells us why fossil finds are important and how the ages of yesterday inform us of the modern day.
I found this task fun and very interesting because I got to learn more about paleontology and what they do for a living and what they do is inspiring for the younger generations that would like to pioneer paleontology.
LI: Explain how the rising of Matariki signaled a time of celebration, reflection, and preparation.
To explore Matariki we worked collaboratively to complete a series of challenges. Something I learnt was was that different patterns have different background ( Past Stories ) My favourite challenge was to actually make the patterns on the star because it shows how we can take the time out of our school day to embrace, express our feelings on the Matariki tradition.
LI: To discuss the impact of volcanoes on the environment and human communities.
Our challenge was to research the impact of a specific volcanic eruption in Aotearoa. We had a choice of Mt Tarawera or Whakaari. We found out about wharaari white island and researched about its recent eruptions and the many facts of the eruptions and what the aftermath was of those eruptions. I found this task interesting because whakaari white island had a eruption and cancelling the tourist from visiting the island for safety precautions.
LI: To write a multi verse cinquain poem that describes the journey of a sleeping maunga that erupts.
We have been exploring cinquain poems. A cinquain poem has 5 lines. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name. Line 2 has 2 adjectives that describe the noun. Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in “ing” and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun. We used our poem to show our understanding of volcanoes. Something I found interesting about this was that it is an easy activity to do because we can use the website “Word Hippo” this is designed for more powerful word exploration tool.
