Tragedy At Tangiwai – Reading

For reading we have been reading a book called tragedy at tangiwai, this book tells a lot of details of the events that took place in tangiwai, this book was enjoyable to read because I could find out more information of the things happening in my country. At 10:21 pm on Christmas Eve 1953 the Wellington Auckland night express plunged into the flooded Whangaehu River at Tangiwai, 10km west of Waiōuru in the central North Island. We have made a google video to tell you some facts about the Tragedy At Tangiwai.

Diary WW1

LI: To retell an event in history through the fictional eyes of someone who was there

For this task I created a video and I talk about what happened during the WW1. We talked together and came up with a story to tell what was happening in the war.  We have been looking at the events that took place at ANZAC Cove on 25 April 1915, during WW1. Many of our NZ soldiers were wounded or killed in action. We looked at videos of life in the trenches, explored the Walking with ANZACs site and read Hami Grace’s diary. Doing this helped us put our own diary entries together.

We used Google Vids to record our diary entries. I enjoyed using this as it allowed me to voice over my diary and share my retell of the story in Hami Grace’s diary.  Something I found interesting about this task was that I could discover how to use Google Vids and learn about the war and what was happening.

What Learning Should Look Like In LS2

LI: To co-construct ways we can make the most of our learning time in LS2

Our challenge today was to co-construct ways we can make the most of our learning time in LS2. We thought about what we expected to happen so we could make teh most of our learning time then thought about what our teachers expected. I collaborated with my group and others around which I enjoyed because I got to learn more about them and listen to their background. This activity was fun because I got to learn the expectations of our class.

Pepeha

LI: To let others know who I am so they can make connections to me and my place in the world.

Our challenge today was to write and record our pepeha to introduce ourselves. I found this interesting to make because I got to learn more about my ancestors, family members, I can connect to others & talk more about my culture.

Kauri Dieback

LI: To understand what Kauri dieback is and how it spreads

Our challenge today was to use the links provided and our own smart searching skills to find out what Kauri dieback is and what we need to do to try and prevent this from spreading. We need to know about this so that we do our part to keep our Kauri safe when we go on hike at camp. I worked with Vaingalo and we found it interesting that the kauri tree is considered a taonga (treasure) by many New Zealanders, particularly Māori, who see the health of kauri as a sign of general well being of the ngahere (forest) and the people. They are one of the longest-living tree species in the world, as well as the largest.

Evolution of the NZ Flag

LI: To understand the story behind our flag

Our challenge today was to create a collaborative presentation that reflects the story behind our NZ flag. We did this by looking at how our flag has changed over time. Something I found interesting was that the United Tribe flag was made in 1834 designed by Henry Williams. Britain saw New Zealand as a individual nation and think of the mana from the chiefs. The New Zealand flag has a Union Jack representing the  British national flag. The Union Jack also reflects on New Zealand being a British Colony.

Swimming Safety

Today we went to swimming, and learning how to swim. First we had to kick stream down the pool with a board. Then we used our hands and swam with on hand on the board and crossing them between while we were  swimming, Then we did back strokes to the other side it was a little bit hard for me to get the hang of it but I got it. we also learnt how to dolphin dive and duck dive, Dolphin dive is swimming to the bottom of the floor we used these toys to swim down to the ground, Duck dive is when we float through the water then push ourselves down and then come back up. We also had a race me and another kid raced each other but we were the same speed.

Rosie Ruiz – Reading

LI: To skim and scan to find facts and make notes in my own words

LI: To ask questions about a text to strengthen your connection

LI: To make connections

LI: To reorganize your information

For this task we learnt about a famous runner who faked the Boston Marathon, Who’s name is Rosie Ruiz.

First we predicted what the text would be about, I wrote the she wanted to cheat because she wanted fame and to get everyones attention to show that he was the best female runner. Once we read the text we answered the questions about the story and what we think happened. We also answered eachothers answers so we could give feedback and get feed back for the next questions. Lastly we use the 6 sentence story with our group and came up with 6b sentences to match the slot and we also changed the sentences our changed it to make sense or different words but the same meaning.

Information Report – Bengal Swamp Tigers

LI: To write an information report that informs the reader about the the Swamp Tiger

We used our smart searching skils facts about the Bengal Swamp Tiger. Once we had found the informatio we needed , we mde notes in our own words.
